A Great Web App That YOU Don't Use

There are thousands of web 2.0 apps live or in development, each built around cool technology and each hopefully targeting a niche.  All the big boys started with a niche.  You should too.

Ryan Carson, guest writing at TechCrunch, gave a three step Web App 101 lesson today.  His number 1 point was finding your target user, and be worried if it's not you.

However, if you are not the target user of your web app, proceed with extreme caution. It’s incredibly easy to make faulty assumptions about your audience’s needs or wants. Remember that you’re an early-adopter and way more technically advanced than your average person. In many cases, 90% of your customers will think “The Internet” is the blue “e” icon on their desktop
.

Facebook works hitting college kids 'cause Mark Zuckerberg is one of us.  Hopefully Athleon will work that way too, since we're all athletes and all college age.   It's extremely difficult to think we'd love a web 2.0 app if you either, a, don't love it yourself, or b, aren't one of us.  Hire some interns (and pay them) to find out.
